MLB: National League Update
Subheading: This year’s playoff teams are set!
As the final weekend of the regular season approaches, this year’s post-season teams have now been decided. The San Francisco Giants have obtained the final Wild Card position. The other Wild Card position will go to either the St. Louis Cardinals or Pittsburgh Pirates depending on who can gather the most wins during this final weekend. The Pirates are only one game behind the Cardinals so this race will be very close!
Important things to know this weekend:
• The Giants postseason berth is there third in five years! The Giants have a chance for home field advantage in their Wild Card playoff series depending on which team has the better record
• This year’s NL Cy Young award winner will most likely be LA Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw. The pitching superstar leads the MLB with the most wins; most strikeouts per nine innings pitched, and obtained the best ERA (earned-run average). It would be Kershaw’s third win, after receiving the Cy Young award in 2011 and 2013.
• The Arizona Diamondbacks hired Dave Stewart this week to become their fourth general manager in team history. Stewart is the only current MLB GM to have played and coached in the major league. Stewart is a three-time World Series champion pitcher, having won with the Los Angeles Dodgers, Oakland Athletics and Toronto Blue Jays. He also once served as a pitching coach for the Blue Jays.
