The Ryder Cup is a golf tournament that pits the best American golfers versus the best European golfers and takes place every other year. With Tiger Woods sidelined over the past 12 months, names have been popping up that even I’d never really paid attention to and yesterday, Ryder Cup Captain Tom Watson made his wild-card picks for this year: Keegan Bradley, Hunter Mahan and Webb Simpson (seriously, if you don’t follow golf – who are they???). Most likely, these young men are partying frat-boy style today because they are going on one serious road trip – to Scotland, to play Gleneagles golf course from Sept 26 – 28.
The rest of the players on Team USA are automatically in based on their standings – they include Rickie Fowler (the one with the trucker hats), Jim Furyk (the old guy) Zach Johnson, Matt Kuchar, Phil Mickelson (nice guy), Patrick Reed, Jordan Spieth, Jimmy Walker and Bubba Watson (my husband’s favourite because he is self taught).
What’s interesting to note about the Ryder Cup is that is is all about national pride. There is no money, just the unbridled joy of trouncing the Europeans (or the Americans depending on your point of view). Stick with The Gal’s Got Game for Golf 101 over the next few weeks.
