American golf pro Mo Martin won her first major career title at the Women’s British Open at Royal Birkdale this past Sunday. Ranked 99th in the world, she was not expected to even challenge at the top of the leaderboard let alone win. The 31-year-old from California surpassed Norway’s Suzann Pettersen and China’s Shanshan Feng.
This comes as a surprise after South Korean women have owned the greens for almost three generations. It’s thought that they became inspired to try the sport after their own Se Ri Pak won the 1998 U.S. Women’s Open. After motivating an entire country, the tide seems to be turning in women’s golf once again. Many players identifying as American are actually of South Korean origin, such as golf superstar Michelle Wie.
The Women’s British Open is a Major championship in women’s professional golf. It comes as no surprise that while the men’s version of the championship has an $8 million purse the women’s purse is a mere US$3 Million. The men’s tournament begins Thursday of this week.
