Despite enduring one of their worst spells on the pitch in decades, the current Manchester United squad has been named as the most expensive in English Premier League history.
Louis van Gaal’s attempts to undo the damage of last season has seen United spend a collosal £105million (approx $189million CAD) this summer, bringing the squad value up to a staggering £401.2million ($722M). This is £57million ($102M) more than Manchester City, the defending English champions.
The arrival of Angel Di Maria earlier in the week for £60million ($108M) was enough to push United ahead of their city rivals. And with the transfer window not yet shut, the spending spree might yet continue.
As the cost of producing a squad capable of a title challenge continues to spiral upwards, the ability to produce an elite team remains the preserve of the richest few.
