source Today marks the first stage of the 97th edition of Giro d’Italia 2014. Following tradition, the race will start outside Italy. But, this is the first year the see Grande Partenza (Big Start) will start outside Europe with Belfast as the departure point. The endpoint on June 1st will be in Trieste.
The route covers over 3,2000 kilometres during its 21 stages and three rest days. Across the participating cities, banners, flags, and even sheep are painted pink to match the colour of the leader’s jersey.
As this year marks the 10th anniversary of Italian cyclist Marco Pantani’s death, the Italian Grand Tour will pay tribute to him with three climbs in his honour.
