The group stage of the World Cup is almost over. So far, 12 teams have managed to advance. Here’s what we already know:
*Early favourites, Spain, weren’t the only soccer-crazed nations to fall short of expectations. England, Italy, Croatia, Ivory Coast and Japan failed to make it to the last 16, too.
*Though Brazil was expected to do well on home turf, other South American countries — Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica, Columbia and Uruguay—have made themselves right at home at this year’s WC, and have advanced to the knockout stage in style
*African and Asian nations have not had much luck in this WC, but Nigeria, the reigning African champions, have progressed to the last 16, despite losing to Argentina in their final group game.
What is still up in the air
*Four matches are left to play with the top two spots of groups G and H still up for grabs.
*Big match of the day: USA vs. Germany! These two nations are duking it out for top spot in Group G. To add more intrigue to this match, the current USA coach is none other than Jurgen Klinsmann, who won the World Cup in 1990…as a player for Germany!
